Japanese beetle killers

Hi,

This was a great topic buried in another thread. Thought I'd bring it out more. Someone said that White Geraniums and Four O'Clocks both kill Japanese beetles. Are there any other plants that keep the beetles away or kill them? This time of year, my rose bush has lace for leaves and beetles in every flower! (Ditto the malva and black gum tree.) I have tried picking them off, and filled jars with them, but to no avail. (On top of that, it was gross.)

Also, I've never been able to figure out what is meant by white geraniums. (I think someone else asked this too.) Does this mean pelargoniums (the annual)? I planted two of these next to my rose bush one year and didn't notice a difference in the beetle population. Were the plants too small? Should I have planted more of them? Or should I have planted a perennial (true) geranium? (Any suggestions for varieties?)

Thanks!

Joann
