Companion for Plants for Northwest exposure

Hi--I'm relatively new to Gardenweb and I've posted this question in two other places but this is probably where it should have gone originally.

I wanted to know if anyone could suggest some good companion plants for veitchii gardenia and southern indica azalea that receive northwest exposure (shade in am, full sun in pm until sunset). I had hydrangea macrophylla but they suffered terrible leaf burn so I have to relocate them. I was considering "Gold Flame" spirea (which someone thought would work) and "Powis Castle" Artemesia but I'm worried that it might die from too much water.

The gardenia and azalea seem to take the sun fine, but anything I've planted that wants full sun starts to grow toward the light and lean over in an unattractive fashion. Should I just plant more gardenias and azaleas instead? This is near the house foundation too! Thanks

:-)
