 o
Companion plant for New England Asters?

Posted by kentstar 5b NE Ohio (My Page) on

I purchased some 'Purple Dome" Asters, which I originally was going to plant around my hybrid tea rose Maria Stern to hide her legs. Now, however, I am being told that asters get floppy and invasive. Can I stil plant them around Maria Stern? How would they look? Any ideas? I've never planted these, so I'm not sure how well they would look.

Thanks all,
kentstar

'Purple Dome' is a compact aster - 18".

Did you do it and do you like the effect?

This page lists two companion plants to the aster:

Little bluestem and Snowy goldenrod.

This one lists Heavy Metal Switch Grass and Henry's Garnet Sweetspire. No mention of roses, but maybe they might be conflicting once the plant comes into full growth. Betweens 18 inches and 24, so it might overtower your rose.
