Flowers in Veggie Beds

Hi All,

I am very interested about learning about companion gardening. Specifically, I am interested in integrating cutting flowers into my veggy beds. I have a rather small yard so I really want to get the best bang for my limited space.

--I have one 30'x4 area where I plan on planting cukes and squash.

--I have a 50"x42" bed pole beans

--I have a 4'X6+' bed tomatoes

--I have a 9'X3' allium bed (will be used for cukes and bush beans in the summer)

--I have a 9'x3' sq foot garden bed (no flowers planned here).

Anyhow, I am interested in intergrating Dalias, Sunflowers, and zinnias for cuttings. I also am planning on adding in marigolds and nastersiums (sp???).

I am looking for advice for other cutting type flowers. I live in Sacramento Zone 9 CA. I need flowers that can stand up to our heat. Here in Sacto, I need to deep water my cuke plants everyday just to keep them healthy. I wonder if this would kill Dahlia bulbs.

I don't plan on adding in bulbs this fall. My 30x4' bed will have a cover crop this year. The other beds are already planted to compacity. I did, however, plant 2 types of hungarian bread poppy and dwarf sweet peas seeds.

Just out of curiosity, can I sneaks a few daffodils into my my cabbage/swiss chard/brocoli raab/snow pea beds?

Thanks in advance for your advice on flower choices?

Thanks.

Angelique

Angelique:
Please see if you can get "Companion Planting" by Gertrud Franck.ISBN# 0 7225 0695 3
INBN# 0 7225 0694 5 pbk. It's hard to find, but filled with companion planting for everything. All your answers will be there. If you have a specific difficulty, write back and I will look it up for you. I know you will regard this book as gold, I do.
Good Luck, Mary Anne
