I think your idea of using dark red/brouwn Heuchera around your phormiums is a good one! Maybe you could plant Coleonema (shrub or groundcover)--"breath of heaven"--near it as well. The regular is green and airy with tiny pink or white flowers in the spring, a beautiful shrub that grows about 5 feet tall. The groundcover type, Sunset Gold, is yellow and stays about a foot tall with a large spread. A white verbena and chocolate cosmos would look nice in summer too, great ideas! Why not play up the outrageousness of your color combo?

Sounds like a nice combination. I don't know the shrub and will have to check it out. It sounds like it would also be a good match for another phormium I have in the garden "Pink Stripe"

Even though I'm on the other side of the country, I have worked with Phormium 'Sundowner'. I personally like New Guinea impatiens - SuperSonic Hot Pink with it as well as the ivy leafed geranium 'Mini Cascade Pink'(it's not too salmon) and an upright eucalyptus. Maybe throw in a tender blue plumbago?

I planted one of these...several years ago and most likely a vivid color..It is now ginormous (6-7ft tall and at least 10-12' or more wide. I've had to move a couple plants and probably more...

It has lost it's color..it's now primarily green and yellow with small hints of color. I can't remember what color I got but it wasn't yellow! Probably a wild pink or maroon.

I just came across a review somewhere that says they do loose their color once they get big!! Damn it...here it is a huge architectural piece in the front of my house with out the color I expected..so be warned..If I remember correctly they loose the color when allowed to be themselves and grow wild..but not in pots. I live in Oregon south of Portland and everything grows big here.
