Dear Conifer Friends,

The US and Canada owns about 7000 conifer cultivars.
We have now a possibility to create this gallery from all known sources: conifer fans, collectore, breeders, nurseries and anyone, who knows about american originated conifer cultivars.
I join to the company.

    Dax,
I like your Lime fir. I also made a lime Abies cilicica, which keeps the colour all the year, like this one.

    What is american?

By my point of view a conifer is american if found in the States and Canada. If an american finds what abroad, or foreigners find what in America they are shared between America and the other country.
In the last decade many czech, austrian and german breeders found nice selections, they are american-czech, american-austrian and american-german shared shots, listed in both countries.

The estimated number of shared conifers may reach the number of 3-400!

Anyone of you may ask what is going on?

I try to organize the gallery of the greatest conifer nation of the World in one.

I expect we may have about 6500-7000 documented conifer cultivars, not yet counted. I can divide this cultivar mass to 3 thirds. In 2010 I published the Conifer Treasury of the USA & Canada with 4800 cultivars. Since that time we have much more.

The first third may be 2500-3000 plants, which are generally well known for collectors, may have about them better infos, as usual. Descriptions, photos, breeders etc.

The second third are a company of about 2000, described in the last 2 years (Jerry file 1325, Waxman file 100, Greg Williams file 100, and further newly found 500 cultivars), which was organized by me together with many other conifer friends in the USA, Canada and Europe).

Finally I see a dark last third, which are listed in different times by american nurseries 30 years back, where we have just names and a nursery where they were ever listed. This company maybe of about 2000. I expect the 80-90 % of them are really americans, hopely. As I work only from written sources (beside my own eyes), it seems to care these dark cultivars, and wait for better times, as we could get more datas about them. I hope that the dark parts may get some light with a common action.

Please, share us the hidden conifers of your backyard.

Finally a remark to the attached file. The 1000 ACS photo links are no more valid, as the ACS database was reorganized since that time to new IDs. In the new edition these will be replaced.

I have many other unique, American-grown cutivars, but they are all too small to make good examples for this treasury. Nonetheless, I'll see what else I can come up with.

    Tom,
I guess I like the Rockies, then the soft conifer world of Sid, then the wet Oregon and the mysterious South, which is also a nice home of conifers. Just for others. You can help us to discover the South with your enormous knowledge.

Pinus longaeva 'Schulman Grove' reportedly synonymous (?) with P.l 'Horstmann' but according to Edwin it was discovered by Jerry Morris. I may make a question thread about this if it slips Edwin's notice here.

    Dave,
Hortmann found 2 longaevas in America. Hexenbesen 1 and Hexenbesen 2, which is also mentioned as Horstmann. I think this happened in the 80's.
I'm informed by Franz Etzelstorfer, that Schulman was found in 2006 together with Jorg Kohout as they visited Jerry Morris. They three found some brooms together with Jerry, after that Franz and Jorg made other expeditions. They found a lot of brooms in the Southwest, which are listed by me and Etzelstorfer in Conifer Treasury of Austria 2.0 in 2012.
I had to go back to Franz to make clear all their american brooms. Franz and Jorg gave a lot of american names, which are very similar to Jerrys name world. It kept a time to divide all their own brooms from the Jerrys brooms. If you have a look at the Austrian 2.0, you will understand it in a second.
Fact is, that Jerry not listed the Schulman till 1996.

I'm not a criminal inspector, I must believe to my author partners, so I do it.

Anyway, your Schulman is a nice broom, thanks.
