Visible in the upper left hand corner of the plant.
It will be cut out shortly. This is the second time this plant has had a reversion. Different place each time.

| You mean Picea abies 'Nidiformis', right ? That's a gigantic one ! ....how old ? PS. For those who may not know, "Nidiformis" means "nest-maker". In fact, here in Montreal (as in other French-speaking lands), the common expression for "pothole" is "nid-de-poule", which means chicken nest: chicken nests being shallow holes in the ground..... |

Yep, 'Nidiformis', that's what I call it. My neighbor gave it to me after his horse walked on it twenty-five years ago. I cut out the broken branches and turned it into a bonsai. Eventually it got ahead of me and now you see it untouched in quite a few years. The framework for a good trimmed tree is hidden under the canopy. I should open it up a bit. Maybe 'antique' it. Make it look old. Show some leg... That would be a lot nicer than the 'blob' that's there now. I see a few collector gardens in here that will need to do that in a few years...Shrink an otherwise small plant even smaller...just for the room, if nothing else. |

| Others might prefer the layered density - not what a would call a "blob" at all - that is natural for this cultivar - and much the point of it. This one is big enough that pruned successfully it might be possible for it to look like a Cedar-of-Lebanon. Many trying to get that effect would just turn it into a poodle - or worse - and spoil it. Heavy training and pruning of conifers depends greatly on the pruner knowing just exactly what to do. Otherwise you may end up with an instant derelict. |

| I like the look of it now as well. Once you start showing off the legs you may find varicose veins! By that I mean all the dead twigs now covered would look unsightly and generate hours of trimming to clean it up. tj |

| I would leave it...unique in its own right. Not another like it. To me that is the most sought after look every conifer collector is striving for and you didn't even have to work for it. Best, Dave |

Looks like I'm not going to prune it. I'd be opening Pandora's Box. Look at all the work you guys saved me! Thanks. Mike |
