Norway Spruce

Hello All,

I have a Norway Spruce in my yard planted in 1958 by my grandfather. I recently had an old hemlock removed that was about half the size as the spruce and was about 20 feet away. I am considering planting a Tulip Tree as a replacement. Do you think the tulip tree would provide too much competition for the spruce? The spruce is clear on the north and east sides, the south side of the spruce has a 25 year old pin oak that is perhaps 15 feet away.

Would a tulip tree block too much sun if it was planted west of the spruce about 20 feet back?

Thanks!

These are all large-growing trees. Tulip tree is about the largest-growing eastern native hardwood. Even out here, where all examples are planted, we have tulip trees over 120' tall.

There is a rare dwarf cultivar that has been on the market, don't know where you might find it now. Otherwise you could try 'Fastigiatum', it has upswept branches.
