My abies koreana 'King's Select' seemed to only put new growth out from the lower trunk as the top died back, which I cut off. In the fall I might tilt the plant in the pot slightly to compensate for the sideways growth.

Taken a couple of weeks ago in the rain.

    Today, hardening off.

Abies koreana 'Brilliant'. A little concerned for this chap as there were a few branches that shed their needles. Seems to be darkening ok though.

Nice little plants here. Some new to me!

Here is a nice species Abies koreana loaded with purple cones and accompanied by several Berberis thunbergii 'Rose Glow'.

Rispetto, thanks for your beautiful pics!

Please rename 'Kristallkugel' back into it's original cultivar name which is 'Gruebele'.
I mentioned this also a little while ago in another topic...

'Silver Show' is the correct cultivarname.

It's quite new select from Mr Artur Maj (www.daglezjaryki.pl). He described it as conical, slow growing and didn't mentioned about foliage. I can tell you more next year. Last season it was completely green.

  • coniferjoy

Sam, why did you mention the (magnificent) part behind the 'Aurea'.
The cultivar you're showing us is the 'Aurea'.
'Aurea Magnificent' is a cultivar name for a golden yellow cultivar of Picea abies...

Here's one that I'm sure very few of us have seen.

    Abies koreana 'Bonanza'
    {{gwi:607876}}

This is a witches broom selection discovered on Porterhowse Farms by none other than Don Howse, himself. In the background is Abies koreana 'Kohout's Icebreaker' for comparison. I had the distinct pleasure to tour around Don's grounds while on a recent conifering road trip.

Here's a picture of Don with the skeleton of the original broom. Hello, Don! This cultivar has not yet been released and it's hard to say when and if it ever will be. Maybe if we all think and say very nice things about Porterhowse Farms :)

Edwin, I was simply using "magnificent" as an adjective as we commonly do in the English language to describe the plant as having a beautiful and appealing appearance... not part of the cultivar name because it's in parentheses.

Dave, I too saw that broom when I was at Porterhowse Farms last year. How did you manage to get a plant?!?

You want to graft some and trade? :-)

    -Sam

  • coniferjoy

Sam, for sure Dave didn't got a plant from Don.
That pic was taken at the Porterhowse nursery.
Unfortunately the 'Bonanza' isn't as healthy as the 'Kohout's Icebreaker'...

Last January I took a simular pic.

Hey everyone, I found this old thread and figured there are some nice Korean Fir Hortsmann that are quite big by now. I am in search of some scion wood for last minute conifer grafting. Could I by chance buy some from you? I could even send you a prepaid shipping label if it made it easier for you? Thanks!
