Upon request, I am initiating a photo gallery for Picea orientalis. So please share your photos and nursery of origin, etc.!

My favorite cultivar is 'Tom Thumb Gold' (found as a witch's broom on 'Skylands'; mine was purchased from Coenosium Gardens)

Spring Grove #100. Seedlings were planted from 1890 - 1920. Only 8 ft across and 80 ft tall. It has survived a lot of history.

I agree with you on 'Tom Thumb Gold' Sam.

I really like 'Atrovirens'. It flushes a typical bright green but shows well on the older extremely dark green foilage.

'Mount Vernon' or is it 'Mt. Vernon'?

'Tom Thumb Gold' This plant is burnt to hell now with a eastern exposure.

Will, did you prune that 'Atrovirens' or did you bought it this way?

This one was found by me as a slow growing seedling selection:
    Picea orientalis 'Filip's Little Mound.

Pawel, what color(s) does Wansdyke show?

Does anyone have a photo of a larger 'Fat Boy'. This is one I have, also.

    Thanks,

    Dax

    Picea orientalis 'Reynolds'

Possibly R#2? Compared to Blue's #1 it seems rangier. Has had some damage but the bud and lammas growth profusion indicate a very dense plant to come.

Dax, I got Wansdyke since few weeks. Now it's light green. I can tell you more next spring

Thanks Pawel. I had never seen one, however I am familiar with the Wansdyke name as he is a Thuja occidentalis cultivar: 'Wansdyke's Silver'. The orientalis seems to show lighter and darker color on your plant which peaked my interest.

Picea orientalis 'Wansdyke' does have a golden flush in Spring which will revert back to green in summer.
It's between 'Early Gold' and 'Aureospicata'...

Sam, did you notice if your plant became more white as the season progressed?

Mine finally and mysteriously whitened up a few weeks ago. Perhaps due to the lower temps.

Interesting you should ask that, Will..
Because it quickly went from barely-white to the white/silver typical of this cultivar and then burned in the sunlight and warm temps to some extent.. Many other parts of the plant suffered slight burn. This branch was the best-looking.
That being said, I believe the white color does come on after the growth matures. If this has anything to do with the fact that the nights are becoming cooler, I wouldn't know...

Ireena, both are very nice specimens you bought from Mira Malik.
I've to say to you that the cultivar name 'Albovariegata' doesn't exist, this is a false name for what is 'Silver Seedling'...

Thank you, Edwin, for name correction! I make my plant catalog now and want to have all the names exactly right. I do not like the inaccuracy of plant names:) Picea orientalis is rare in my country...

interesting note about the species plants at Spring grove, it seems most of them keep there lower branches like the one shown above while other spruces don't. They also seem to be more narrow. Gorgeous plants.
