They have no gallery Gallery

For cultivars whose species has no gallery.

I don't think I saw a Cupressus gallery, and I know I didn't see Xanthocyparis.

Cupressus nootkatensis 'Green Arrow'

{{gwi:613348}}

Pinus resinosa 'Don Smith'

{{gwi:613350}}

Pinus x schwerinii 'Wiethorst'

{{gwi:613352}}

Pinus peuce 'Mrs Cesarini'

{{gwi:613354}}

Pice glehnii 'Chitosamaru' (sold as jezoensis)

{{gwi:613356}}

Pinus x nigra 'Bambino'

{{gwi:613358}}

'Bambino' is a good example of barerooting benefits. It was in a 4 inch pot when bought 4-5 years ago and while preparing to plant I found it's largest root wrapped around the trunk six times. Still a record for me.

Other pix welcomed.

    Hello, Clement. Bob Fincham from Coenosium Gardens currently has this plant for sale.
    I do not know the story behind the name, however.

    Do you have a more distant pic of Abies amabilis 'Compacta' ?

    It looks almost like it's frosted white with narrow green varigation.

  • monkeytreeboy15
    12 years ago

    It isn't variegation, it is simply the silvery stomata bands on the underside of the needles contrasting with the glossy-green surfaces. Here is a picture of the whole plant:

    A few of these species I am going to make some galleries later this Summer. I just have too many photos to cram into one gigantic post. Pinus nigra, Abies fraseri, Abies pinsapo and Abies veitchii for starters.

    That said, here are some I can add:
    Cupressus nootkatensis 'Boyko's Sundown'. A wonderful gold-green, usually more golden. This color lasts year-round but it's stronger during the growing season. Grows more like 'Pendula' which is to say somewhat weeping but not as narrow as a plant like 'Green Arrow'.
    {{gwi:613406}}
    Closeup.
    {{gwi:613407}}

    Part shade, note the considerable less color. (Needs to be moved).
    {{gwi:613408}}

    Abies cilicica 'Spring Grove'
    {{gwi:613410}}

    Pinus densiflora(x nigra perhaps?) 'Judy's Gem'. A newer introduction from Jim Boyko, named for his wife.
    {{gwi:613412}}

    More photos!

    Pinus monticola 'Nana'. A beauty.
    {{gwi:613413}}

    Abies vejari. An alpine fir from Mexico. Very rare and endangered in the wild. Also stunningly beautiful.
    {{gwi:613414}}
    {{gwi:613415}}

    I need help here too(paging Edwin please!).
    Three plants, perhaps all the same cultivar? Looking at my notes, they were all suggested as...

    Abies cilicica 'Spring Grove', the cultivar I posted a few photos above. Here is one of the other two plants listed as:

    Abies cephalonica 'Hunnewell W.B.'. Certainly not cephalonica.
    {{gwi:613416}}

    Abies fargesii 'Headford'. Often mistaken as Abies delavayi('Nana Headford' - which is incorrect).
    {{gwi:613418}}

    Abies x umbellata (cross of Abies firma x Abies homolepis)
    {{gwi:613419}}
    {{gwi:613420}}

    Abies firma 'Halgren'
    {{gwi:613421}}

    Picea glehnii 'Yatsubusa'. Awesome colors and VERY compact. Happy here in part-shade.
    {{gwi:613422}}

    Pinus wallichiana 'Frosty'. Need to remove some understock.
    {{gwi:613423}}

    Picea bi-color 'Prostrata'
    {{gwi:613424}}

    Juniperus communis 'Horstmann'. A weeping variety.

    Pinus virginiana 'Driscoll'

    Characterized by a unique, bright, light green color, this compact, rounded mound takes on golden tones in winter. Its somewhat irregular, globose habit fits well in a range of garden situations, but its ability to grow well in poor, dry soils where other pines won't, makes it an excellent choice for challenging, sunny sites. An American native from the East Coast, it has twisted, substantial needles, outstretched branches and reddish purple young stems Grows about an 1-1/2 inches a year. Never a sign of stress from the Midwest drought and heat wave we experienced this summer. One of my favorite pines and the only one bearing this species name in my garden. Again one of my better buys.

    A huge one Dave. Didn't you acquire this monster recently?? Amazing it did so well through your Summer.

    Abies squamata 'Flaky'. Seems like this may just be a mislabel though without knowing more, I wouldn't want to speculate too much. A neat intermediate tree with beautiful color and apparently stunning cones.
    {{gwi:613427}}

    Picea rubens 'W.B.'

    Picea rubens 'Pocono'. A strange one, very slow growing.

    Picea glehnii 'Nana Freemont'. More info needed, I received this orphan as one heck of a gift from Bob Fincham.

    Abies numidica 'Pendula'
    {{gwi:613434}}

    No, because it's not a broom of Abies magnifica, it's a broom of Abies lasiocarpa. Probably Abies lasiocarpa "Glacier" = "Logan Pass"
    Maybe the confusion come from Horstmann nursery.
    In my knowledge, only "Mt Si" are a true Abies magnifica broom.

    There is no such thing as a natural hybrid between Abies nordmanniana and Abies cephalonica. Like Abies nordmanniana, Abies bornmuelleriana belong to the alba group, not to the cephalonica one.
