They plant them here as street trees, I bet 1 in 100 people know what they are. But then, five years ago I didn't.

So if they are volunteering then there must be viable seed bearers (the stinky seeds?).

Yes at least some of those stinky nuts are viable seeds. I don't know about the germination process. The plants I discovered were all probably 1-2 years old. They were growing curb side.

Not sure what I'll do with them. I've root pruned them probably 5 times. They seem to be very robust. Last winter was harsh, zone 7. They made it through, in that pot, with no problem. I think they could probably go a while longer with just pruning and fresh soil.
