    Hi Ireena

Yes Thujopsis dolabrata 'variegata' reverts when it
gets older.Whats the other Thujopsis next to it?

  • ireena (zone 5-6)

It is the same - Variegata - just close up and with bright light... It is the pity, that it reverts, but still it is beautyfull:)

Ireena you have some interesting conifers in your
collection do you have other Thujopsis cultivars?

  • ireena (zone 5-6)

Now, unfortunately it is the only one. I was afraid of the cold resistance. But my Hiba is happy, I think:) Your 'Krugers Finding', 'Decumbens', 'Aurea' are fabulous!!! Good envy from me......:)

Thujopsis dolabrata 'Nana' (It seems to become a yellowish tint in winter)

Sam, your yellowish 'Nana' is much nicer to look at then the 'Melbourne Gold' which isn't worth the "gold" part in it's cultivar name, it's more of a light coloured green.
I got rid of it several years ago for that reason.

I do like your winter yellow one, which is differend because the normaly seen this cultivar is green coloured the whole year.
Maybe you found yourself a new cultivar...
Get it propagated and keep us informed in the future.

Euan, your pics looks more as a Thuja to me.
It's foliage is to fine for a Thujopsis.
Normaly seen the leader structure is open, in this case it's to dense.
Also it's colour doesn't fit, Thujopsis colour is a dark shiney green, while this one shows a light green dull colour...
Do you have a close up pic as well?

    Edwin

Its a Thujopsis as Tom knows his conifers he sent
me a close up of the foliage.

Thujopsis dolabrata 'Cristata' photo taken by Tom Cox

I don't see any fasciations, or are they in the ground at it's roots...?

  • blue_yew
    Original Author

No it doesn't have any fasciations but the branch
    structure is different.

  • coniferjoy

    Yeah, it's structure is differend...
But, no fasciations is not worth the cultivar name 'Cristata'.
By using this cultivar name it will get false expectations when buying it without seen a pic in advance...

  • blue_yew

I agree it needs a name change 'contorta' would be better
however it was found by Ansorge so can it be renamed?

  • coniferjoy

Euan, renaming can't take place because it's in cultivation for a while.
It seems that some nurseries in the U.S. are growing it and have spread it for several years.
By renaming it, confusions will arise which we've to avoid always...
