Urban Arborvitaes Need Help

I planted these two arborvitaes in April of this year in a 3 foot wide bed. They had plenty of water in the beginning months but started to brown when i went away for a 10 days in August. Some of the lower bare spots are due to chairs that had been next to the trees. I am worried that the back and wall and the 10 days without water caused these to brown. Some of the soil/mulch has also eroded away causing the very top of the root ball to be exposed (about 3 inches of a 2.5 foot ball so not too much.)

I have been watering each tree daily for 10 minutes on a steady drip. I am concerned that these trees are goners once the winter hits. Is there anything I can do to help them besides the daily watering? Mulch the root ball? Will the bare spots recover? Hollytone? Help!

Hard to tell from the pic, but basic watering rules say to make sure the rootball gets soaked completely and then don't water until the soil is dry about 2-4 inches down. Watering on a schedule is tough to get right. Mulching will help but don't fertilize unless you know a deficiency exists.
