I lost in February 5000 photos as my private photobucket closed. After restoring the documentation I renew the 2010 Sagalassos Expedition chapters. This publishing is a part of the Semidesert Conifers files.

Sagalassos Expedition 2010

Hodi Toth, Jozsef (HTJ) is one of the �Semidesert Fathers", who are saving and breeding endangered plants. Not long ago I started a series of �Semidesert Conifers" on the Gardenweb threads. The discoveries of a late October one man expedition up to the Toros Mts. in SW Turkey is following here in some volumes. HTJ enriched the conifer literature not only with more than 30 new cultivars, but he managed to find and collect the majestic silvery grey lebanon cedars around the Irmasan Gecidi Pass (1526 meters), and on 1800 meters of Sagalassos near to an area, where ancient ruins are ruleing the Toros Mts.. I give an outlook to mediterrain evergreen oaks too.

The editing and publishing of this expedition comes from me, photos and plant desciptions are made and written by HTJ.

Pinus brutia Big Lettuce

A witches broom on a 15 meters high Pinus brutia. Needles longer, straighter and stronger green than on the normal growing tree. Very denser than foliage of tree, very slow growing, maybee 3-6 cm per year. View as a big lettuce in salad-bowl.

6 m in height, slender, deep green. Moss-like foliage, upward gradually narrowed. Lateral heads short, horizontal, leader searches the sky.

8 meters high, very slender plant. The broadest point max 30 cm, only the highest 1 m is slenderer. Laterel heads are horizontal, at right angles to leader. Maybe the best selection.

6 meters in height, deep green. Young parts are tousled, confused but later massive pole. Foliage as parsley, closed, dense. Dramatic effect in overall impression.

One meter in height, like a little fortified castle. Short, 4-8 cm long needles but in some places only 1-2 cm. Twigs only 3-5 cm long, vast number of ramifications. Roundish buds, with vertical, brown bands. Bark of twigs like a snakeskin. Bizarre phenomenon.

2 meters in height, 4 meters broad plant. Without leader and lateral heads, boughs in broad curve, last years twigs near vertical. Needles 15-18 cm long, deep green. Very slow growing.

Likely origin Tavsanli forest, with many erect exemplars of the species. 2 meters in height, perfectly vertical, parallel leaders. Parts with foliage in many floors, needles 10-12 cm long, straigth, deep green. Breadth of plant almost on whole heigth alike, only near peak narower. Like a Cephalotaxus harringtoniana �Fastigiata� with longer, lighter green needles.

3 meters high, strongly stretched egg-form plant. Needles 15-18 cm long, deep green. Lateral heads parallel but scarcely view because of a rich foliage. Leader explicit. A handsome specimen.

3 meters high, regular conical habit, with leader and lateral heads. Foliage deep green. In all years 2-3 growth, the needles of last only partially or not at all developes./Like a Pinus nigra �Wurstl�/ On peak several naked axises finish the year. The needles 8-10 cm long, rigid, flat, straight. Bark on twigs light brown, like a snakeskin. Whitish, conspicuous legumes of bundles. Also conspicuous that cones erect, not hangs.
