good dwarf conifers for my area

I've recently become very interested in all the neat dwarf conifers out there.

Based on my Central Ohio climate (cold zone 6, or a warm zone 5), sufficiently, but usually not excessively hot summers (avg highs mid 80s, about 15 - 20 days over 90), and soil that is a heavy clay, but does not usually retain standing water (except one small area), with an almost dead-neutral pH, what are the best dwarf conifers, and what should I avoid?

I like the firs (Abies) the best, esp. the Korean fir, they seem more interesting and delicate than the spruces...but I SEE more spruces around, is that because spruces perform better, or just that people think they do?

What about others?
