"No way you'd get me up that high!"

....its not getting up, but getting down that seems to be the bigger problem: remember the scene from the Police Academy movie, where the cop tells the old lady "don't worry ma'am - I'll get your cat down from the tree...." :O)

  • coniferjoy

With all respect for your hero Dax, we allready have a million witches'brooms of Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris.
All these pics don't shows us nothing with any value, these are all the same.
A yellow or a variegated one would be special...

  • gardener365

The Larix.... and the super human ability to climb. I'm sure Slama likes your comments Edwin, not! And the doug fir, almost forgot that one.

    Dax

  • coniferjoy

Yep, you're right Dax, his climbing materials are fantastic but the Picea abies brooms are not.
I've seen a milion of these in Poland and the Czech Republic, the same is for Pinus sylvestris who he discribes as Pinus silvestris all the time.
Larix and Pseudotsuga are fine but I would like it more impressive if he shows us some new Abies nordmannia and Abies grandis brooms.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not offending him but the days of the normal Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris brooms are over because it's useless to collect these and give them a name.
I've studied witches'brooms for over 10 years and I know which are very rare and useful and which are to common now.
I hope you understand my comment know...
Jan, you're pics are amazing, keep showing us these but then with other brooms if possible.
I'm aware that this will cost some confusion but that isn't my attention at all...

  • longaeva54

I agree with Edwin. Brooms of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies ,all brooms are similar, only the names of brooms are different. If some one is collecting them,he is only collecting records.

    Hi all,
with all respect guys, we have allready not only bilions witches. There is another bilions of boytoys, cars, guns, girls etc on all over the world. I am not pro gardener and for me, not only, I mean, looking for new bud mutations is amazing game.
By the way, some stupid comparison. So many school boys play a hockey, to have now such few excelent players like Gretzky or Jagr etc. To choose some excelent not only connifers superstar, it is necesarry wide base, elementary, I mean.
On the other side I understand pro gardener which have their glass houses overflow with milions of montgomery spruces and another not so good selling oldiesâ¦
Sorry for my english. Who wants to change some scions with me, contact me on email, please. Witches are big. Thank you. Make fun, not warâ¦
    Strange looking spruces etc..

"my hero" - I was trying to be funny, humorous. You're still one of the kings to me though, also meaning "king" being a "cool" way to say it, funny/fun.....

Well, anyway, this has nowhere to go now. My attempts at humor and fun are now invalid.

Keep it live Jan! Meaning, have fun, and show us how much fun you are having.

With all respect............ and I know a great broom when I see one too :) I'm no amateur.

Cheers fellas - whiskey..... be brave :) vodka, etc-

    Jan,

Thanks for sharing your boy toy experiences with us on the forum. Your threads are unique to this forum and to most of us we can only dream about what you have acccess to right out your front door.

Only a pro could put together one of the most beautiful conifer gardens in the world. I can't imagine all the time and effort it took to put your garden together. Pleasurable and stress free work I would think. Boy toys are fun.

    Thanks again,

Jan, your adventures in the countryside are fun to enjoy, but I'd like to see more pictures of your garden. It looks like you have been doing this for quite sometime.
I have a set of climbers, but don't do as much as I used to. I didn't go after brooms, because I wasn't on the look out for them. I usually climbed up a tree to limb it up, or attached a line, if needed, to cut it down safely.

    Mike

  • in ny zone5

But Jan does it safely. Even when he jumps off a tree on a cliff in a hangglider he has those wind turbine towers down below ready to catch him!
These are really nice dwarf conifers, thanks for showing it!

Jan, super Picea abies witch'. I've always been attracted to those blues/gold/and just blue mini's of those, slowest of dwarfs. Anything 2" (5cm) are the best wb's.

Witching for Dummies......I need to understand. LOL

First of all, I am loving all of those pics - what a blast!

So....you find a witch, cut it off w/o getting killed...and then..?

Do you take a small piece off of it and graft it to rootstock and try to grow something that looks like the original witch you took it from - only alive...?

If so, why do you take the whole witch off of the tree instead of just one or two chunk/scion/whatever they are called?

  • catherinet

Hmmmmm....curious. Do you need permission from the land owners to cut all those brooms off? Does it hurt the remaining tree? Did you cut that one tree down just to get the broom?
I'm just scratching my head over this one. I'm into "Live and Let Live". I would just take pictures of them and go on my way.

  • sluice

I'm not speaking for Jan, but here are my 2 cents.

Ademink, yep, the idea is to take a small piece (a scion) off, graft that onto rootstock, with the result growing like the original witch. Sometimes I only take a few cuttings, sometimes the whole broom. It might depend on the location of the tree (remote mountain or city), where the broom is (high or low in tree), and other things.

Catherinet, if the broom is on private property, I get permission first. It doesn't hurt the remaining tree. I've never cut a tree down just to get a broom. I imagine in places where timber is harvested, broomers might coordinate efforts with loggers.

  • wbgarden
    Original Author

Dear Catherinet, have you ever seen some autumn deerwork on trees ?
Have you ever seen group of hinds gallop thru the reservation ?
Have you ever seen heavy machinery working in the forest ? Have you ever seen heli timber harvesting ???
My seventy kilos on a tree once a time is like a butterfly kiss.
    heli logging
Witchs broom is a mutation. Simply it is a cancer. Sorry for my non scientific words. Every creature fight with this. Trees too. Try to destroy this thing. Do some branches over it and close the light and air. Next year maybe you find this broom completly death.
Another problem, broom ball on a top of a tree in winter is mostly icy ball, because dense, very heavy, some hundreds kilos, and one mighty blow of wind and physics do their job...

    {{gwi:632887}}
Please, call me a tree doctor. Thank you. Sorry for my english...
