hemlock is shade tolerant..

i dont think its an issue of whether it will 'live' .. all other things done properly ....

the issue is whether it will 'color' or hold that color .... according to the name ...

white tissue is usually problematic.. in that it burns in high heat ... which is why we would favor some shad.e. especially during the heat of the day ... if possible ... 3pm is a bit late.. but better than a sharp stick in the eye.. so why not try it ????

but i dont have that answer specifically .....

and on transplanting.. it will probably burn regardless.. so dont freak out.. if it does green up.. or burn off ...

I live in the Pacific Northwest so I cannot attest to it's ability to withstand heat, but my specimen is in fairly dense shade, in a shady area already and covered further by hostas and Japanese maples. Take a look.

Thanks. I don't want to plant something that will have trouble thriving so I'll just put it in the shade somewhere else around the property.

Mine burns with east exposure, full sun up until noon.

but how long has yours been in the ground whaas??? .. can you call it FULLY ESTABLISHED????

You need northern exposure or under a tree dappled light all day or some morning sun but not as much as whaas has his plant in. Every single Hemlock at Bickelhaupt Arboretum is Due North in front of a row of mature Pinus strobus with a row of Yew growing up to the unshaded parts of the white pines. None are in sun.

Whass' plant may acclimate someday, but I wouldn't plant a hemlock on my property that sees full morning sun past 10 am.

In the Pacific Northwest, west of the Cascades, or England... sure, acclimation will occur in full sun.

Probably not, however Betty Rose is two plants over and doesn't burn.

Mine is in full sun until about 11:30 with no burning. In winter (albeit the sun is lower) its in full sun until about 2pm. I did, however, fry a Tsuga c. 'Woodrose' that had 4 hours of midday sun.
