Yep, they're cones, and yep, if you run a grass fire through the plant, the cones will open to release the seeds. Some cones will open without fire too, as one of yours is starting.

Ken - you don't need such a concentrated fire to open the cones! That's a bit too much, it'll burn them right through.

Serotinous cones....require heat to open. Common with species adapted to 40-80 year forest fire frequencies. A good example are the serotinous cones of P. rigida in the NJ Pine Barrens.

You could also open them by putting them in a food dehydrator for several hours.. less.. intense.
