I have some seeds of Athrotaxis cupressoides and A. laxifolia. I'm thinking of storing them in the fridge till the spring, do you think is a good idea or better in a dry place?

Also, did you use any special mix for the seeds? I was thinking of 1 sand - 1 grit - 1 compost

Nice...wish it were growable here but it certainly isn't.
Shasta are you sure the hemisphere is the problem, per se? Do they rot in places like Eureka? It is plausible that because the northern hemisphere has been more widely settled, certain areas have more plant pathogens brought into them. But I suspect these would be in serious trouble in any climate with muggy, warm-night summers, like the East coast.
They are very difficult, but they are growing the legendary Richeas in Cornwall (rhododendron relatives that resemble yuccas), an area you'd expect to have a fairly cosmopolitan plant pathogen community. So I think it's really more the climate than the area/hemisphere. Soil could play a role too. The soils of AU are very depleted of things like phosphorus, and high in things that are uncommon elsewhere.

And btw - according to a person who probably knows more about what grows in the Bay Area than anyone - the Bay Area gardens have not conquered the Richea yet. But it has more to do with seed availability and germination requirements, he thinks, than an inability of them to grow there. They might only do well in the foggiest microclimates though.
