Frosty Conifers

Conifers can look even more ornamental when winter's harsh frosts lace their needles.

Please share some of yours before spring arrives! (It will come sooner than you think..)

==>>> no monkey.. it wont ...

in you educationary evolution.. make sure to include a stop in the Midwest for a couple years ...

i have the potential.. to see that which you post.. thru 6/1 ... at which point it is summer ...

nothing worse that seeing such ... on fresh growth ... it can and will.. kill such.. and many a plant ..especially non-estblished plants.. will die outright ... not having the stored energy to rebud ... especially the borderline zone pushers ...

boy thats cranky .. lol ... but i am suffering bad from SAD ... seasonal affective disorder ... so cut me some slack ...

regardless of that spital ... BRILLIANT PIX ... i asked a few times what your camera was.. if you told me.. i did not retain it..

and regardless of the camera.. your 'eye' for concept is brilliant ... i see a great future in catalog design for you ... be sure to take some interdisciplinary classes to foster such ...

i remain envious of you chasing your dreams.. thanks for the pix ...

and pshaw on spring ... talk to me in mid to late march.. lol

Ken, get yourself a sun lamp - Or spend a week in florida! SAD is definitely nothing to play with. (I actually kind of like winter - as long as it's cold and snowy)

We are *usually* out of winter by March - We still get a few frosts (like last year, for example), but the spring bulbs begin blooming in late February. I actually can't wait 'til spring! (But, being as it's only January 11, I hope we get a little more snow and cold)

Ken, your matter-of-fact rhetoric is most amusing.
And, I'm using a Canon EOS 60D.. I have Dr. Albers to thank for partially sponsoring my purchase of such a nice camera.

I'll be adding a few more photos later this evening.

Araucaria araucana makes a nice place for a bird feeder. Squirrels don't climb it. I think a bear would have a hard time.
Cryptomeria japonica, 'Sekkan'. 26 F. That's cold for here, and supposed to get colder. Maybe more snow!

No frosty conifers, but I've got underwater conifers - We had 4 inches of rain last night, after 1 inch of rain Thursday night, coupled with 8 inches of snow melting (it was 60 the last 2 days) - The little stream behind my house now is 1/4 mile wide - I do have a new water feature now, though!

Seriously, I can't imagine 2 feet of water washing over young spruces is too good for them.

Super nice pics!I wish I could take shots like these at this moment, but everything got squashed underneath three consecutive storms of heavy, wet snow. Even a 10+ feet P.nigra got bent almost all the way to the ground. I'm starting to ask myself what's the use of buying gold or blue or polka dot colored dwarf conifers if I have to shovel the whole backyard to enjoy the sight?

Well, we ended up not getting much ice (thankfully!). Most of my trees fared the flooding (The water was gone by Sunday evening - Thank goodness for loamy soil and underground gravel beds). I've got a few Red spruces (Picea rubens) in the floodplain, and they're still there, and still alive! Hopefully that was it for the year (Flooding, I mean - It would be nice to get "normal" rainfall, whatever that is), it washed away a fair bit of soil.

Snow has been here for a few days already, but this night was the first night there was fog which froze, so I could finally take some pictures of conifers covered with ice crystals too! :)

Alpetris, I accidentally thanked Sam for your pics. They're a similar tonality and I missed your name at the top. To be confused with Sam is flattery indeed, and deserved!

Thanks everyone! Yes the Cedar has been known to swallow the kids at the bus stop corner. Anyone notice the gum... Some before and after shots after I took out 3 large barberries and trimmed out 1/3. It has since filled in even better...perhaps some Frosty pictures tomorrow!
