In this third conifer garden tour you'll see what makes a cultivar different from a species. Plus, a world record will be broken by saying 'Papoose' the most times in a minute.

Hello stevemy,

Nice informative video.

I have a Picea sitchensis 'Tenas/Papoose'.

A miniature..mine puts on about 1 inch of new growth each year.

One of my must have conifers.

In the same location for 10 years.

South exposure, full sun from 8 Am-5 PM. Typical Kansas heat and humidity.

Has thrived in that location with absolutely no issues and one of my most trouble free conifers.

You failed to mention...due to short sharp needles it is considered deer resistant.

Was found on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Good to hear Dave that your Sitchensis is doing well in your summers. Sometimes it takes collectors to really put a species to the test in different growing conditions. Plus, we're the only ones crazy enough to try it.

Another great job Steve!
How soon is our truckload of conifers arriving from the PNW?

Steve,

The Pinus sylvestris 'Bonna' you showed us is in my opinion not the right one.
The true 'Bonna' has needles which are much more blue coloured and it doesn't have a pyramidal shape.
I think that you showed us a Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri' which has indeed blue-green needles.
This is the 'Bonna' which I have in my collection:

Dave,
'Papoose' and 'Tenas' are not the same plant but do have the same origin.
Both look the same whenn they are small but at an older age the'Papoose' is slower growing and is smaller in all it's parts. Was formerly known as No 1.
'Tenas' grows faster and was formerly known as No 2.

The link didn't take me to your third video Steven, help!

Dave, my 'Papoose' grows more rapidly then yours. Last years flush - and first after transplant, pushed an easy three inches on most terminal buds. For my climate anyway, I'd have to classify 'Papoose' as a medium dwarf globe.

Great plant though to be sure and very sharp - ouch!

Interesting Coniferjoy. My plant came from Bizon nursery here in the states and I have some degree of confidence in them, but you never know how the whole cultivar labeling thing goes.

Will, use the link below to go straight to the conifer tour page.

Hello Stevemy,
Conifer Gardens Nursery has been operating for more than 30 years at Ferny Creek in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, 40km east of Melbourne in Victoria.

During this time we have been renowned as a leading conifer grower in Australia, supplying both the public and the trade.

Currently we grow more than 600 varieties, from tiny dwarf conifers to the large, fast growing screening conifers. We have attractive display gardens featuring many dwarf conifers.
Thank You.
