Niemetz vs Bialobok vs Spring Ghost - etc

OK, I know some of this has been battered around in the last year or two, but I wondered if more time has maybe cleared some of the details on these four Picea varietals.....

Neimetz - Spring Ghost - Bialobok - John Paul II

I'm not debating name clarrification but more trying to understand the primary shape and growth patterns to expect from these guys.

I know they are all greens to blues that push in spring in colors from white to cream to yellow. But are they all pyramidal or coned shaped or are some staying globulous? What about growth - all dwarfs - any miniatures - any intermediates?

I know several of you guys have now had some time these have been in your gardens. Can you help me clear some fog?

thx Mark

Yes,
All are a trees, however when you graft scion from lower branch you are a bushy plants.
All have a white new growth.
Niemetz are a old selection of Niemetz from Romania
Spring Ghost probably selected in USA ???
Bialobok from Poland
John Paul II probably Bialobok imported in USA and renamed for the fun.
I see also a picture of Niemetz photgraphied in Holland showed under the name Millenium by the same nurseryman of John Paul II.
Just crazy and indelicate.

NEVER knock your own posts down .. especially in the doldrums of winter .... GW is just not that active ...

my question to you:

WHAT DOES IT MATTER????

all that matters is what is available on the market ... buy whichever you can get ...

that said ... coloration is a vigor variable ...

green pungens have a growth rate of about 1 foot ...

the blue ones.. being a green tree with a wax that reflects the blue sky.. are basically the same ...

when we get to these foo foo pungens.. that have white tissue for a month of the year [???] .. and add the fact that it is usually suggested we plant them in some shade to hold or extend the color in summer ... we reduce vigor ...

most of my SG-spring ghost are under 2 feet .... and barely get 6 inches of growth ...

i have none of the others you list .... and i dont recall them being on sales lists in years past ...

all will have the basic shape of a nice pungens ... in time ... based on clements side graft issues ...

i recall the jag part.. but are you in tex???

if so.. the issue is how long the color will last in warm clime...

some springs the cream on SG can last 2 weeks.. in a very cool spring ...

but if you get a few days of heat.. right at bud burst.. well..color can last minutes ... well.. days ...

regardless.. if you have the space.. these are toe curlers.. even if for only a week a year ...

i would recommend you find one that is blue .... with the spring color.. to add to your longer enjoyment ... SPRING YELLOW if you can find it .... and SG is not quite a green the rest of the year.. but not quite blue ....

i dont know if this cleared the fog.. or added to it ... i dont have time to fool with pix today ... maybe later ...

Hey Ken, I was asking about these four because I'd like to only do one of them. I was trying to compare them as to size and shape. I have been able to find suppliers for most of them.

I was hoping for a slow growing dwarf, primarily true blue more than green, that had a decent push in spring.

Located in Oklahoma springs are usually warm. So it is true they change pretty quick. That was why I was wondering which might push slower or longer.

Niemetz is green pushing yellow
Spring Ghost is blueish green that pushes yellow
Maigold is green that pushes cream
John Paul II is blue that pushes cream

Looks like one of the new kids might be my best bet....John Paul II or even Spring Blast.....

thx Mark

As far as I know, 'Bialobok' is the same plant as 'John Paul 11', or should it be the other way round, as 'Bialobok' came first, so 'John Paul 11' is an illegitimate name. 'Niemetz' pushes more of a white in comparison with 'Maigold' which is more creamy-yellow. I can't see any difference between the colours of 'Niemetz' and Bialobok'. I would guess all will make regular broad pyramids in time.
