Scanned 35mm Photos (37)

All except Picea glauca 'Beehive' are from Bickelhaupt Arboretum, 2001. Some of the plants may have been removed from the collection, however. For those of you who work on Conifer Databases, I've saved the photos at 640 x 480 so they won't need any downsizing. I think there are naming issues with several plants, including: Thuja occ. 'Filiformis', Picea mariana 'Wellspire', & Picea pungens 'Blue Totem' - but I cannot be sure. Please correct me whenever possible, thanks...

Hope you enjoy!

Nice photo's Dax,

You gave permission to chance names if they were wrong spelled, well here's one:
Larix kaempferi 'Diane' = 'Diana'

Pinus koraiensis 'Glauca' is the old name for 'Silveray'.

It seems that the Thuja occ. 'Filiformis' you show us is the right one but unfortunately the photo isn't clear enough.
Indeed, there's also a Platycladus orientalis 'Filiformis'

Hi Dax and CJ. Thanks for posting this series of wintery images on an equally wintery friday over here .
I like the silhouette of the 'Diana' larch very much (and also several others...). How old would a tree like that be,approximately? T.

Thank you folks. Tunilla, I would say that Larch is between 15-20 years old.

That dog was my life. He was a trooper... :)

We missed ya Coniferjoy.

The Sawara labeled 'Lutea' in the above picture appears to be a filifera form, perhaps casting some doubt on the identification.

"P. mariana 'Wellspire'

Introduced <1991 by Wells nursery of Mt. Vernon, WA. Called COLUMNAR BLACK HILLS SPRUCE, Picea mariana Fast Wells. The actual identity of this clone is anyone's guess, the nursery evidently confusing three species: P. abies, P. glauca and P. mariana. Likely a P. abies cultivar mislabeled"

--A.L. Jacobson, North American Landscape Trees (1996, Ten Speed Press, Berkeley)

Under the previous entry, P. mariana 'Fastigiata', Jacobson notes that trees sold in the 1980s under that name were a P. abies cultivar like 'Cupressina'.

I have observed myself that stock coming from Wells in recent years as upright P. mariana forms have been the same as other plants labeled P. abies 'Cupressina' elsewhere.

Thanks for this warm welcome, I like it very much to come back!

The Larix kaemperi 'Diana' grows pretty fast which can be till one metre per year in good circumstances, so I think the tree at the photo is less younger then 15-20 years old.
Unfortunately something happend with it's leader, maybe the cause of a bird.
I think this tree is about 8 years old.

The Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Lutea' is mislabeled because the true 'Lutea' doesn't have treadlike foliage.
If this is a sulphur colored form like the 'Filifera Aurea' then the true cultivar name is 'Filifera Flava'.

Again coniferjoy it greats to have you back.

I thought so bboy - I appreciate that info. And thanks too, coniferjoy.

Lots of photos to sift thru today. Tomorrow I should have a nice photo post up and visible from this weekend's excursion, to Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery.

Take care,

Dax
