Pinus parviflora Recommendations

plantmarker

Hello Everyone -

I am seeking advise and the posting of photos (if possible) of special Pinus parviflora cultivars. I want/need to add to my collection with these fine cultivars. The only one I presently have is P. p. 'Blauer Engel' ('Blue Angel') and I love it.

I am very interested in getting your suggestions and the reason why you like them.

Thanks so much for your input!

Photos of parviflora's would be awesome. Either this thread or start another. There are many I've personally never seen. The name 'Jim's Mini Curl' has enticed me for several years. One of Dennis' plants. Let's see em folks -

    Hi Plantmarker-
I also like Pinus parviflora 'Blauer Engel'. Mine is just a 4-5 year old graft, but is looking nicer each year. The photos I have are from young plants from previous years(can not get pictures now due to snow cover).
    1. Pinus parviflora 'Nellie d'- pushing spring growth(a favorite)
    {{gwi:645106}}
    2. Pinus parviflora 'Little Hedgehog'
    {{gwi:645107}}
    3. Pinus parviflora 'Jims Mini Curl'- This is just a 2nd or 3rd year graft, its even hard for me to see what it will eventually be like.

Here are 3 more dwarf forms of Pinus p. in the deep freeze in Kansas City.

    Listed in order shown:

'Adcocks Dwarf' Small needles on short stems. Can be flat globe or a upright conical.

'Burke's Bonsai' Leaves are small and blue green. Will grow 4-6 inches a year if not pruned.

'Pent. Azuma' Plant is a real dwarf, growing about 1-3 inches a year. Great for troughs too.

    My fav's would be:

    'Regenhold w/b'
    'Beran'
    'M-parv. - 7'
    'E -2'
    'FW - 3'
    'Richard Lee'
    'Wabi Sabi'
    'Myo Jo'
These are all mini's although some like 'Wabi Sabi' and
'E - 2' and 'FW - 3' grow extremly slow. No pics due to snow cover. Another fav would be 'tano mano uki' that has beautiful white to slightly pink new growth.

    Just incredible!!

Thank you everyone for the recommendations and photography. Keep 'em coming if you got 'em.

Is it just me, or are parvifloras the stuff that dreams are made of?

I need to confess that I have OCD (Obsessive Conifer Disorder)! Thankfully, there is no cure.

Would anyone happen to know U.S. sources for some of the cultivars that bluespruce53 posted photos of, specifically?:

    P. p. 'Betsy'
    P. p. 'Billie'
    P. p. 'Linda'
    P. p. 'Tenysu-Kazu'

    Also, is P. p. 'Tenysu-Kazu' the same as P. p. 'Tansu-Kazu'?

    Thanks!

Dennis Dodge at Bethlehem Nursery probably has the finest selection of parviflora cultivars, anywhere!
Just for information P.p. Betsy is also known under it's previous code of, FW-4, and Linda is also known under the code FS-3.

    PM,
I think I read somewhere that P. p. 'Tenysu-Kazu' is the same as P. p. 'Goldylocks', or the two plants are so similar that they are indistinguishable from each other.

I guess I'm not a real P. parviflora nut (yet), but one that did catch my eye is Miyajima:

    {{gwi:645149}}

Anybody got a big one ?

  • picea

Parv Tansu Kazu is likely the same as Goldylocks. I had them side by side and couldn't tell any difference. I have discussed this with Bob Fincham and Don Howse. Bob said he didn't see and difference. Don said that one year one looked better and the next the other would look better but they could be the same plant.

I got Tansu Kazu from Dave's Nursery years ago and I think he still offers it.

Pinus Parviflora Blauer Engel should be candle pruned every year . It likes to strech a little.

    This is from Dennis Dodge:

Many of the Pinus Parviflora that have been on this page that have non Japanese names such as :
    Pinus Parviflora Blue Lou
    Pinus Parviflora Betsy
    Pinus Parviflora Billie
    Pinus Parviflora Catherine Elizabeth
    Pinus Parviflora Dendo
    Pinus Parviflora Iona
    Pinus Parviflora Little Hedgehog
    Pinus Parviflora Lorraine
Pinus Parviflora Nellie (After my mother )
    Pinus Parviflora Smout
    Pinus Parviflora Karen
These plants were introduced into the trade by a good friend and plantsman by the name of John Proudfoot from Scotland . These are only a very few great plants he has developed by cross pollinating Pines and growing them on for years to pick out the most dwarf and the bluest forms. These plants were rouged out of thousands of seedlings and grown for many years before naming . John has also introduced many Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Pumila Dwarf's such as Pinus Sylvestris Denny Boy and Pinus Pumila Blue Note both of which are true garden gems.
I have been most fortunate to have John as a friend and to be one of the first to introduce most of his plants to the US .
    . Dennis

    Pinus sylvestris 'Denny Boy'

    Pinus pumila 'Blue Note #2'

    Pinus parviflora 'Little Hedgehog'

    Hi,

Dennis wanted me to convey that Pinus parviflora Blauer Engle is not a John Proudfoot and the reason he added the photo was purely accidental to it being so blue!

    Later on.

  • bluespruce53

The parviflora named 'Nellie' in the list should read 'Nellie D.'

  • bluespruce53

    You can also add to the John Proudfoot list ;
    Pinus parviflora Cuddles
Pinus parviflora Eilidh (scottish spelling for Ellie)
    Pinus parviflora Linda
    Pinus parviflora Megan
    Pinus parviflora Helen Brown

Does anyone have any recently-acquired Pinus parviflora cultivars whose photos they would like to post?

This has been an awesome thread.
