why do some picea root

i can think of P.glauca 'conica' being rooted..

and kellermans blue cameo [offhand joy!] ...which i think is P. abies???

is it significant they are both dwarf's .. or is it dwarves ???

are there others that root??? outside of picea ???

let the debate begin ....TIA

'Conica' is not just a dwarf, but also has juvenile morphology. This roots much more readily than adult foliage.

Ken, it's Picea abies 'Kellerman's Blue Cameo'...

All juvenile forms of Picea glauca var. albertiana are easy to root.

Dwarf forms of Picea abies are more difficult, maybe because of their adult needles...

So how was it that Iseli was able to root Picea pungens "Fat Albert" on such a large production sale? Why was this successful technique not applicable to other pungens cultivars? Perhaps RC could shed some light on this.

===>> edwin.. when i said 'offhand' ... that loosely translated as being too lazy to verify it ... but lame excuses aside.. i should have caught the possessive apostrophe ... thx for the clarification ... [i think dinner was burning.. you never know when the conifer muse will strike.. gotta have priorities .. lol ... the heck with feeding my children.. i have conifer issues ...]

sooo.. does it follow that all juvenile forms root more freely ... than say adult phase ... ???

there are many chams ..oops.. cham's and junip. that root rather freely.. adult phase .... even for a novice like me .. [you know.. you try 10.. and get 2 or 3 .. ]

but do the juvenile forms root even freer/easier ???

and how do they know which will .. is there some predictability.. or is is just a "hey, lets try everything" type of experimentation ...

it will be interesting if RC can give us some history.. w/o giving away trade secrets ...

Hi Ken,

From this and other of your posts, I'd guess that you're interested in conifer propagation from rooting cuttings. Can you share some of your experience(s) with rooting conifers?

If you're getting into the more challenging ones, some pines can also be propagated this way (in particular I believe some mini cultivars of P. mugo are done this way).
