pros and cons of grafted conifers

I have just recently gotten into conifers and a few I am after just can't be found unless they are grafts. Not sure why but I don't like the idea of a grafted conifer. What are the pros and cons of grafted conifers and am I turned off by them for no reason? IDK why but its in my head they would have a high failure rate or something..some conifer experts help me out here so I can buy some expensive trees LOL

Hi Mike,

I'd like to assure you that grafting is often the only way that some of these treasures can be propagated.

If you know of any other way, we're listening.

The only con is that many nurseries let then get horribly rootbound before grafting.

whats your other option???... hope and change ...

crikey man.. if you want it.. suck it up and buy the grafts ...

and then let us know.. so we can teach you up on how to deal with pot bound stock, as noted above ...

Good grafts don't show and the difficult art of grafting is like alchemy or generating life. Once you've tried grafting yourself you'll see what I mean. Cheap grafting of Cacti can look bad. A lot of expensive plants, not just conifers are grafted and fruit trees. Simply no 'yuk' needed for a universal process.

well Ken is all jacked up on mt. dew isn't he LOL..IDK why I just had it in my head I would rather have something on it own roots. I'm very aware alot of them, variegates and things don't want to root and grow very slowly on there own. Just wanted to ask. All of my Jap. maples are grafts and I don't have a problem with that just something about the conifers made me not want a graft. I was mainly looking at this jap. umbrella pine and found a few diff. forms all grafted so I might give one a try and see how it turns out. anyone got some good sites they recommend that does good graft work on hard to find conifers? If I'm going to get one Id like to give it the best shot possible with a good graft from the start.

miketrpic. You can use the search bar provided by this forum that will search the forum for quaified pro nursery threads of past. It has been a topic many times and there is lots of good info and reviews that some of the folks here have put alot of time into. No shortage right here.....Happy hunting
