nice broom. Shelly looks like a proud new mamma. I just checked with the RHS encyclodedia and there appear to be just a few Pinus taeda cultivars out there:

'Cochrane,' 'Compacta,' and 'Dixie' are all mentioned as dwarf cultivars. Doesn't say if they are seedling or witch's broom selections. Another is called 'Pendula.'

'Cochrane' originated at N.C. State University. Both it and 'Dixie' were first listed by L.C. Hatch in 1988.

As far as cultivation goes, I've only seen the species growing in arboreta in the PacNW. I've never seen the aforementioned cultivars. With that, I think you're on to something.

On a (somewhat) related note, what kind of success did you have with your Pinus virginiana 'Al's Irish Drift' from last year?

Does anyone know where to find any of these brooms? I think they would be a sure fire dwarf pine for me.

We see many dozens of brooms on our native pines here every year (including taeda). I find them boring, personally, but I can tell you where some of these are if you want scions.

Josan, which Pinus species are growing in your area?

Maybe well be lucky and have a nice dwarf from this broom. I think i had heard sometime back that Henk has one named bear.
~Dave, My 'Irish drift' turned out to be one of those difficult ones to get to take for some reason. I do have two of them that are doing fine so far...with fingers crossed....
I find during the doldrums of winter, propagating brooms can be fun, challenging and rewarding....anything but boring.
