I'm afraid you would just have dead limbs on both of the interior sides of the remaining two trees. Might be better to just let them all grow together...

but all that said.. what you need to do ... is plant some replacements about 8 to 10 feet closer to the camera.. because those overly mature pungens.. are going downhill ...

it might take a decade.. but they are skiing down that slippery slope ..

simply because you can see thru them.. that aint right ... dont you think????

True, with each year that passes the bottom growth dies a bit..I actually planted a ginkgo, and giant sequoia, they are just out of frame.. but will help to fill in some of that area..Also a leyland just to the right of the row..

I like Ken's suggestion...would it be lame to place Picea abies Cupressina or the like in a similar grouping in front of but staggered/offset from the current planting?

If those are Picea pungens I'd be even more inclined to do so. I have a feeling they will continue to decline. Just don't look to happy.

I lean towards replacing all three - they're fairly scraggly.

Those Picea abies Cupressina you mentioned are really nice, I had never seen them before..
Yes, the trees there currently are picea pungens..They are about 35 years old..
I wonder why almost all the old picea pugnens I see become very bare and ragged.
Definitely will consider taking them all down..
