I'd have though it should be OK with you, but be prepared to irrigate during dry weather.

It actually likes more summer heat than it gets in the cool wet parts of Britain, but the warmer parts of Britain are too dry for good growth.

'Beautiful but difficult'....early budbreak and late freezes make this one a challenge! The one(1) specimen that I have has experienced a complete dieback of new growth(newly emerging) on numerous occasions. The pic below shows three(3) competing leaders resulting from '05 freeze. Protection is a 'must' to grow a symmetrical tree.

Well I think we get alot more rain here than almost all of Great Britain. The town I live in has averaged 50 inches of rain per year for the last 50 years which I believe is close to what the wetter parts of Wales, Scotland and western Ireland recieve, so I think I'll be optimistic about the water requirements. Conifer50 could you please explain what you are talking about with the issues of budbreak and late frosts and how this can be prevented. If anyone else has any pictures of this tree could you please post them.

Compared to eastern Britain, yes, but you are also about 10 degrees (Celsius) hotter in summer, so evaporation, and consequent water stress, are proportionally much higher for a given rainfall total.

Also the parts of Britain where it grows best get more than that - e.g. Kilmun Forest Plots in Argyll (where a small plantation of Abies pindrow is growing luxuriantly) gets 200cm (80") of rain per year. The only factor suggesting its growth there is less than its potential is that the cones are rather small (6-8cm, vs. 10-14cm on wild trees in the Himalaya) and somewhat malformed.

Forrest....Budbreak is simply when the plant(Abies in this case) initiates growth in the spring. This inherent factor often determines which species can be successfully grown in a particular area. By avoiding plantings in 'frostpockets' and situating plantings on northern exposure, on can retard early growth somewhat.....or simply plant a species with 'late' budbreak such as Canaan or Nordmann Fir
