Spring is coming, things I'm looking forward to.

Spring comes early here in the Pacific Northwest, and then stays around usually until early July. It certainly hasn't arrived yet but it's very close. Spring for many of us is a time of great celebration, after a rough Winter and only occasional sunlight. For gardeners though Spring is an orgy of good times. Here are eight things I am looking forward to this Spring(or this year):

8. New bulbs making their showing. There seemed to be a huge discount on bulbs this year at the stores I frequent and I made one or two dozen impulse buys.

7. Clematis all over. I also found a reasonable clematis source and thus planted several around, underneath and near trees and some conifers. It should be fun to see this golden dawn redwood blooming purple-violet.

6. Finishing a small project. This was before I removed an overgrown, ugly maple and...

replaced it with a soon to be overgrown trio of Abies nordmanniana, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Boyko's Sundown' and Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium'. Also included in this project was expanding the conifer bed to the left full of miniatures and dwarves.

5. Finishing another big project and last good chunk of land I have to play with. St. John's Wort and numerous other less-then-savory plants should be gone in a few weeks and then hopefully I can fill this space with large conifers to shield my house from the wind.

4. Next Autumn/Winter to see if this umbrella pine colors up the same again.

3. Watching this maple from last year. Was a branch grafted from Acer shirasawanum 'Auream' that did wierd and wonderful things. It held this color well into August.

2. Leap year. Plants sleep, creep and leap for for the vast majority of plants in my garden it's the leap year. I am very excited to see all of the plants I've nurtured finally take off.

Wonderful work and pictures. In a couple it looks like your spot is very shaded but pic#4 shows that isn't the case. When you bought the property did you already collect conifers? There's such a dynamism to the layout that if it was all preplanned I'd say mission supremely accomplished.

Where you been?

The Arbor in photo # 4 same as mine. Put a grape vine on it or something comparable. Get one that doesn't produce grapes. It will give that area a lot of character along with softening the look.

^^^I like the grape idea. I've bought a Vibernum sargentii 'Onondaga' for a similar feel to a vine.

I'm looking forward to getting my landscape going...I have nothing right now! That is boring news to all of you.

But I can tell you I much enjoy all the pics everyone posts.

Yeah,bulbs are the heralds of springtime . You can also get some edible mushrooms to pop-up at the end of summer...get some inoculated soil.

Dave, I've been around just more sporadic mixing in work, a heavy off-season softball workout regiment and projects outside have been eating up a lot of my time. That and I feel like I've swamped the boards occasionally with photos and I don't want to become an irritant to some.

That grape vine does look marvelous. Highly glossy leaves, great shape and very full. Now my arbor there is in part shade(gets morning and evening sun) and I have two climbing roses and two clematis set to climb it. I'm a bit skeptical about the roses but we'll see. Does that grape vine you have grow with some mixed shade? How long did it take to get it THAT full? Finally, does it have a fall color? I'd be all over it for sure if it did.

Spring's on hold again here, a handful of days near freezing and some ice pellets to boot. March can't come soon enough.
