Growth of this species in much shade is thin - too thin to be pleasing.

a few gorgeous examples in my neighborhood, but I have no idea what cultivar they are - advice?

ps: up near your name.. you have simply... 6/7 ... if you can go to your members page.. and add the closest city.. you will forestall being asked where you are .. ALL the time ... zone is simply too large and divergent of an area to help you specifically ....

I grow a lot of deodaras in my zone 7 gardens. They are among my favorites because of their airy pendulas forms.

In the size you speak of my favorite dwarf has always been Cream Puff. Full figure, light green color with beautiful cream accents at the end of the branches. Grows in our zone in failry strong shade as well as can take full sun.

Its baby sister is Silver Mist. Not quite as large a grower but very similar colors.

If you want to really keep the size fairly locked in you could pole train a Divinely Blue up to the height you want and then let it go. Most times it will eventually put up a leader but it's growth rate in our zones is pretty slow.

The last one I like is Deep Cove. It's a slightly taller varietal than some of the others I've mentioned but it's still a slow grower and should stay well under your height requirements. It looks like a smaller version of Albospica. It too has a nice cream spring flush.

In our hotter zones some of these almost prefer at least some shade and will still stay fairly full even in 50/50 or more shade....at least that is my experience.
