| That is beautiful. This person knows his stuff. A few observations: Did you notice most, but not all, cultivars are up limbed 1-2 ft. Most cultivars planted 10-15 years ago...some mature specimens...older. Dave |

| That is an incredible journey. I haven't had that much fun going through someone's garden since the first time I saw Foxhollow. I just love seeing larger more mature specimens on a lot of those. And I loe how they have worked to keep them at a size that continues to work with the garden space. I hope they leavw those albums up for some time. mark |

| Absolutely amazing garden! Beautiful mature specimens immaculately displayed and maintained. I like the limbed-up look, and allows him to maximize his garden space. ACS member in Ohio -- open by appointment. Has anyone ever visited this garden? I feel a roadtrip coming on! Kim |
Eyes getting tired

| Been on their site now for over an hour and I've only gotten through about half the albums. I love how they did seasonal color change shots on a lot of the plants. It's great to see them lined up one after another like that. mark |

Kim- Do you know where they are in Ohio? I'm in west central (Lima) Ohio and do quite a bit of traveling around Ohio and Indiana. I don't have a lot of free time to make a special trip, but if I can squeeze in a garden or arboretum on a trip I always try to. Where are you in Indiana? Eliot |

I'm taking this one album at a time .Great horticultural entertainment! You can tell this person LOVES his trees and shrubs. T. PS I was wondering about the mulch...pineneedles? perhaps artificially coloured? Think think...red iron-oxide could be used for this, as it is used for dyeing mortar-mixes.Could prove useful on my limestone clay soil. I'll give that a go this coming spring, given some 'spare' time ! PS 2 Thanks for posting. |

| Eliot - Doesn't look like it's too far from you either. I'm in Bloomington, about an hour south of Indy. Long haul to Toledo! Please come visit if you're ever in this area. I'm surprised if this garden has never been featured as part of an ACS meeting, unless it was just too far from the meeting venue. Thanks Keith for posting this link. I haven't had a chance to go through all the albums yet. I'm going back in for more! Kim |
Red Mulch
| | |
| On the red mulch, I first thought it was what I use....shredded red Eucalyptus. But on some of the closer photos you can see it is needles. I love the shredded eucalyptus though. The red is great color contrast to the plants. The oils in the plant that are released into the soil until the mulch dries out, are hated by slugs and some other pests. And best of all it doesn't float. So in heavy rains like we have here it stays in place. The only con is it costs twice as much as cedar. But I don't care...it's worth it. mark |

| i have talked with several people that have visited his house. They all said that he was not real thrilled with visitors. Another guy that knows him pretty well said that he is just afraid someone will steal his plants. His property is next to the Rossford Library. This guy said to park at the library and yell for John. I would probably call first. Frank |

Yes, fabulous garden. I think I have seen one photo from it before somewhere -- the golden spreader nordman fir: see link below... PS. does anyone know how those walkways are made ? ....they look like they're cast in place -- but with some sort of special mix, that gives them that nice texture. I like the simple, unpretentious look, that doesn't detract from the main attraction, which is the garden.... almost a Bauhaus style... |

| I'm just starting. Wow, very impressive and I do very much like the way he's limbed up his plants. The mulch is called: pine straw mulch. They sell it in bails. The Harper Collection in Michigan uses this stuff exclusively as did Chub Harper in his garden. It's so much easier to spread than ordinary mulches . . . Dax |

| Kb- Thanks for the homepage. Kim-Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I can't remember the last time I was in your area, but you never know. However, I do get to the Toledo area regularly. I would never show up without first contacting him though. Eliot |
