mystery tree in San Antonio, TX

Any thoughts on what this could be:

The thing that throws me is the odd looking bark - mottled yet smooth - and the dense habit. I'm sure it will seem obvious when someone IDs it, but nothing is coming to mind. At least nothing that should grow in central Texas. A Chamaecyparis perhaps? What am I stupidly forgetting here?
