Lethal Hemlock roots?

Hello:

Can one safely plant rhododendrons, azaleas, etc. under hemlocks, or are they poisoned by the root system?

Three years ago, we planted a good-sized Rosebay Rhododendron under some Hemlocks (these rhodies can flourish in the shade). It has not done well at all, although hostas, astibles, and even strawberries have been quit happy there. Our local nursery chap took a look at it last year and said it had been planted at the right depth and should be O.K. The leaves are drooping and yellow and there are no blossoms. Clearly, this is one rhodie in great distress.

Thanks.
