I'm just sick about this. We have a Cupressa Arizonica 'Blue Ice" in a four year old tree/shrub border. Somehow I missed the fact that we never removed the stake tied tightly to the trunk. At some point during this very hard winter, I suppose because of ice weight and wind, the trunk fractured right over the top of stake, about half-way up its 7' height. I have removed the stake, but now I do not know what to do about the injured tree. Do I:
--prune it below the fracture? I shudder just thinking about it. What is likely to result as far as the tree's structure if I do this?
--cut it off at ground level and see what sprouts up?
--dig it up and discard it as a lost cause?
Another question: If I top it and it spreads out into more of a shrub form, is it likely to successfully transplant if we dug it up and moved it to a different location where a shrubby-shaped tree would be more appropriate?
I'll appreciate any help you can give me, and I'll even submit to the chastisement I undoubtedly deserve for my neglectful treatment of our tree.
