Not very. They should be in full sun or nearly so to perform well. Not sure which weevils you refer to, but they are moderately susceptible to tip moths and pine webworms here.

Actually I meant Pine beetles. I will, of course, try at least one of the pines and give the rest away. It may be a hard task though, here where there are already many many pines- people may think I'm a bit crazy! Possibly impress on them how beautiful this one is, gonna be a hard sell.

2-3 grew for years against a west-facing wall,among other trees and shrubs in the Carl English Botanical Garden, Seattle, before finally freezing out. After a time they did get their tops mostly up into the sun.

So you're saying it's not hady in z8 or that it will grow in the shade? Not really worrying abour hardiness- it's been about 15yrs since we went down to 19f. I know someone who has had satsumas unprotected for 20 yrs with no damage. We seem to be in some kind of warm area here in NWLA.

I wouldn't worry about hardiness in LA, mine did well after -10F.
