Needle in a haystack?

From the car I spotted a conifer in front of a hotel somewhere between St. Louis and Effingham Illinois, so zone 6a. I would assume it would be neither rare nor particularly valuable. It was very slender, about 12-15 feet tall but sparsely branched and probably only about 4 feet wide at the bottom. The substantial straight trunk, probably about 4" diameter, was almost completely visible; the thin branches were quite horizontal, not drooping. The foliage looked very soft and feathery - almost like a larch (but obviously not in March). It appealed to me because it would create a lovely vertical accent while taking up very little space in a garden. I realize this is a VERY long shot - but - any guesses?
