Pitch x loblolly pine problem

Very fast & vigorous (24' in 7 seasons), but the last couple yrs the top has died. First yr I thought it was a "weevil" attack, but after several more yrs the damage seems to be creeping downward. No swelling of the stem can be seen. Wondering now if it's fusiform rust or something similar. Any ideas?

Pineshoot borer? Did you prune the dead tip to see if anything was boring down the leader?

Could be several things - you need to get photos and also trim that damaged portion off if possible to get a better look..

It's too high for me to get to safely -- 20'+ up.
