Albers Vista Gardens is a garden to the west of Seattle, Washington, containg a diverse variety of collectible and rare specimen plants. I have the privilege of working in this garden, and I was taking some pictures for the new garden website (posted at the end of this message), and I decided to share this exciting collection of conifers with you!!

    Outstanding effort Sam. I understand you're close to me and Bob and Diane recommended we get together at some point. I live about 15 minutes from these gardens and work less then five minutes from them. We also share many of the same sources and plant interests. It's highly unusual for someone of your age to have such interest in plants and I think it's a wonderful thing. Hopefully I can visit Albers Vista Gardens at some point this year and visa versa. Perhaps I can even trade/sell/donate a few conifers I have to these gardens. It's a small world.

    Thanks for sharing, and the tremendous effort - this was no short task!

    I am interested to see more of this collection posted here, when I went to the web site after you posted before there wasn't much there.

    Some of the names used here need to be tuned. And you will probably have to replace the Ducloux cypress due to the badly deformed roots, something I find on most grafted conifers at local outlets.

    If you let it get big it may fall on something (or even someone) later. I would not plant anything else, that I wanted to hold up over time that had twisted or knotted roots. Ideally deformed plants would not be sent out in the first place. If the roots can't be opened and spread at planting time, there does not seem to be much point in planting a specimen that is likely to strangle itself and/or go over in the future, perhaps then losing many years of top growth development.

    The bigger the successful specimens get, the more impressive the collection will become. I've seen bigger 'Gentsch White' (or similar) here and there, in randomly encountered plantings seen from the road etc. But it is true that in general, in this area colored foliage forms of hemlocks are still on the small side.

    Thanks, Will. It's great to hear such positive feedback. This project did occupy most of my weekend, but this is what I love doing! It is highly unusual; I get that a lot, but on the bright side, I wouldn't have much competition for a job in landscaping and nursery operation in a couple decades! If you would like to schedule a tour, you can contact John Albers yourself by either sending him an e-mail at albers1@comcast.net or call him on his cell phone (206) 779-3112. I love the Finchams. Their garden is absolutely beautiful, and they are such nice folks, too. That sounds like a good plan. So, what town do you live in?

    Bboy, the website has just been up since yesterday. I have not put the pictures on their yet. I wanted to give everyone on Gardenweb a first look at the plants. If you would like to see more photos from the garden, there is a Facebook page for the garden. There are a few albums with several garden pictures. I will add more as I find time.
    I'm not entirely sure the Cupressus duclouxiana was a graft. It's quite an old tree, actually. Is there any way to check on the roots?

    Thanks for the comments, guys!

    Hey!
    That Athrotaxis x laxifolia(intermediate pine)looks absolutely stunning and appears quite happy despite it being far from home. Great to see a "local" in such a far away land.
    Great photos
    Cheers

    Not a problem, guys. Thanks for the comments.
    If anyone would like to tour the gardens, there are tours scheduled for May 14th and May 28th at 10:00 a.m. The tours are usually about two hours long. If you are interested, let me know or contact John Albers through the e-mail address or phone number I mentioned earlier.

    A few plants from the garden that could use some identification:
    1. This dwarf spruce appears to be a Picea abies. However, it can be very difficult to distinguish between the many different cultivars derived from witches brooms. Any guesses?
    {{gwi:682576}}

    2. These pine trees were here when the garden was first started. They appear to be either Pinus contorta or Pinus banksiana in my opinion:
    {{gwi:681457}}
    {{gwi:681459}}
    {{gwi:681461}}

    3. This juniper has new growth that emerges a goldish color in the early spring. Juniperus chinensis 'Plumosa Aurea'?
    {{gwi:681463}}
    {{gwi:681465}}

    4. This yew came up volunteer. Seems to be growing VERY slowly. Any guesses on the species?
    {{gwi:681467}}

    5. This Cryptomeria does not have a cultivar label.
    {{gwi:666740}}
    {{gwi:666741}}

    6. This Japanese Umbrella Pine is growing in a very narrow shape, quite uncommon for the species. There is a suspicion that it was left in its container too long. Is this what is happening or is it some unknown cultivar?
    {{gwi:681470}}

    7. This Mountain Hemlock was purchased under the name Tsuga mertensiana 'Sherwood Dust'. Is this supposed to be 'Sherwood Compact'? It seems to be developing a definite leader...
    {{gwi:681472}}

    8. These two dwarf Abies cultivars were purchased under different names, but they both look like Abies nordmanniana to me. One was purchased as Abies nordmanniana 'Broom' (probably should be 'Hunnewell Broom) and the other was purchased as Abies balsamea 'Verkade's Prostrate'. Are they even different plants?
    "Abies balsamea 'Verkade's Prostrate'"?
    {{gwi:681474}}
    "Abies nordmanniana 'Broom'"?
    {{gwi:681476}}

    Thanks so much for all the help!

    "Pinus heldreichii var. leucodermis 'Smidtii' or 'Smidt'"

    Just Pinus heldreichii 'Smidtii'; "var. leucodermis" is a synonym of the type.

    "A few plants from the garden that could use some identification:"

    Can you repost them in a new thread? This thread is so pic-heavy from the first post that it won't load well.

    Very nice, very interesting.
    However Abies fargesii "Headford" are doubtfull.
    And the 2 thuya plicata are inversed.The first are "Stoneham Gold"
    Sam, Pinus contorta.
    Sciadopitis: possible it's not a cultivar,just a columnar plant.
    Abies balsamea "Verkade's Prostate" are rarely abies balsamea, but often Abies nordmanniana ??

    Okay, thanks, Resin. I will make that change, and I have created a new thread just for identification.

    Clement, how could we tell if it is the fargesii? I got this plant from Porterhowse Farms, a reputable nursery here in the states.
    Is it Pinus contorta var. latifolia? or just the species?
    I just thought the Sciadopitys was intriguing.
    You think they're both nordmanniana brooms? That's what they look like to me.

    Thanks for posting a photo, Clement. It's a tragedy the snow destroyed it!
    Here is what Don Howse says in regard to the name of the plant: "The plant I sold as A. fargesii 'Headfort' came from a plant I originally procured from Bob Fincham as A. fargesii 'Nana Herdford'. It was only through ressearch that I found that name to be incorrect and actually 'Headfort'. I suppose it is possible that both names are incorrect, and it may well not be a form of A. fargesii. Until I know otherwise I have to stay with that identity. "
