I have all kinds of birds that reside in them for various reasons throughout the Winter.

The tall screen they provide makes my unique micro climate possible.

When used for a purpose they have value and hosta beds is not a place for them to even get a start. Happy cutting. They will die on their own when they see you coming with that dreaded sawzall.

Ken, finally a conifer topic I can contribute to!!

I have used the loppers on literally hundred of JV over the last three years with no herbicide at cuttin' time and not a single one suckered from the base. Just make sure you get all branches with growth and you are good to go!

If you leave stumps of the larger ones, they can be pushed over about 2-3 seasons after the cut is made. They rot at the root collar and push over like dominoes.

ps - I chainsawed a few big ones today and the sap was running down the trunk within seconds of making the cuts. Cool...

pps - the small ones up to about 2' are very easily pulled out of the ground without much effort, too

Have seen them resprout when mowed down with lawn mower, cut in the 1 1/2 - 2 1/2" height range, so cut them closer to the ground than that.
Can understand why you might not like them, but here in central Tx., they along with Ashe Juniper (the allergy- king) are the only native conifers growing.
