Please help identify this species of fir

Hello,

I would be grateful for assistance in identifying this species of fir. I thought it was a Balsam, but the needles are sharply pointed. The bark of the saplings does not seem to have sap pockets. There are a few cones upright off some of the branches of some of the trees. There are a 4 big trees (50'+) and lots of medium trees and saplings...they are really growing everywhere. Very few of them have a tight conical form...most are more open.

Thanks!

===>>> trees that require full sun.. are often sparse.. when grown as an under-canopy tree ...

in other words.. the little ones arent getting enough light to perform to expectation ...
