Tetraclinis articulata and new website

Hello everyone. I couldn't find any post regarding this species, so here is my own:

Tetraclinis is a member of the Cupressus family, native to the Mediterranean basin, especially North Africa where there are around 1,000,000 hectares of forest.

It is a very important tree in arid environments, particularly to prevent desertification. It grows in very extreme conditions, often on poor rocky soils, with annual rainfall as little as 250 mm (7.87 inches). Its most remarkable trait is that it can regrow after fire or severe grazing by animals.

It can compete with Pinus halepensis, another common species in arid areas. Altitude range is from sea level to 1,700 m (5,570 feet). Up in the mountains it co-dominates with Juniperus thurifera.

It is an easy tree to cultivate and I am trying to grow quite a few this year. Tips for cultivation and more information can be found on this website I have recently started:

I am making a fence of tetraclinis articulata in the Mediterranean forest of the Valencia region. So far, I've achived to propagate 200 seedlings, which I've planted in small plastic glasses :

Here is an example of a fence of tetraclinis located in a museum of the Valencia city:

It is very drought resistant and a relic that comes from ancient times. In continental europe only grows naturally in the Murcia region.

Are you still on the forum? I am growing a Tetraclinis Articulata here in Malta and would love to hear about your experience growing these. It is so hard to find any information about growing Tetraclinis, especially in pots. Unfortunately the link in the original post is dead. It would be great to be able to chat about these trees with people who have grown them. I hope you'll see this post.

Hello, my experience growing Tetraclinis is that it is an excellent species for dry and hot climates. I don't know much about the climate and soil in Malta but my guess is that it will work.

The seeds are collected around september. They don't need stratification, sow them inmediately.

I have tried cuttings once but didn't work. I will try again.

Another species I am growing at the moment is Juniperus phoenicea subsp. turbinata and Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa. Both are coastal trees or shrubs.

Mine is in a pot. I got him at a nursery here last year.

Do you prune them? If so, how? I haven't pruned mine at all yet. Should I?

What about fertilizer? Are Tetraclinis heavy feeders?

Do you know if they like companion plants in the pot or should they be alone? Current pot is 35 liters. Tetraclinis is 120cm high.

Somehow an Oxalis ended up arriving in the pot too and I wonder if I should leave the oxalis in there or remove it. I am worried the oxalis will rob all the nutrients from the tree.

Here is a picture. We get a lot of wind up here and I'm not sure he likes it. Or maybe it's not the wind and he's just lacking nutrients?

I will look into those juniperus trees too! They look great!
