I'm going to let someone in your zone answer the timing question (here it would be absolutely wait until fall but we're a different climate). What I did want to let you know is that we were gifted an enormous specimen by a nursery that was taking it out of its display garden (it was scratching customers' cars) and we moved it successfully. It was planted in very compacted clay soil on the edge of a parking lot and when we dug it up it had virtually no root ball - a very flat mass about 3' wide by 6" deep. It required sturdy staking and we made sure that it was irrigated well that first year, but it did well from the get-go - not a bit of needle drop, no stunted growth, no die back - nada. We moved it in November in a drizzle. So, this variety seems to take well to transplanting. See link for photo.
