You need something unique and less common. Most people just go to there local nurseries or big box stores to get generic spruce or pine... because they don't know what else is out there that you can purchase online. You won't find it local, but what about Picea abies 'Gold Drift'? (see link below for picture). You can train it up on an 8' stake, and it'll weep down from there.

I actually ended up with a cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon" - or Black Dragon variety of the Japanese Cedar. Not too tall, and fairly slender. I liked it better than some of the weeping varieties, and definitely a lot better than a common juniper.

looking at the pix at the link.. i hope you plan on planting it 8 to 10 feet from the house ...

I am about 8 feet from the corner of the house. And height is an issue really only from an aesthetic perspective - it will clear the roofline of the house where it's at now (if it gets to about 10 feet or so), but the house is a ranch, so anything over the roofline will start to look a little odd.

I recognize that conifers don't necessarily stop growing, but this one seemed to be "rated" at a lower total height and width than most, and a relatively slow growth rate.

Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire' is a nice option for those reading the thread and haven't purchased anything. Ave growth 4-6" for me. Very narrow and stay nice and green.
