Abies lasiocarpa and Abies magnifigca Photo Gallery 2011

A public gallery of cultivars or species - please add any photos you'd like to share yourself.

Abies lasiocarpa 'Siskyou'. One of my favorite miniature's, this little guy has been in my garden three years now with very little size increase. POSSIBLY abies procera.

Abies lasiocarpa 'Utah'

Abies lasiocarpa 'Duflon'. A very cool miniature, looks like a fuzzy, mossy rock.

Abies lasiocarpa 'Mulligan's Dwarf'. Less then six hours of direct sun per day, seems fine two years in.

Abies lasiocarpa var. Arizonica 'Glauca Compacta'. May need Edwin's help on the proper nomenclature but I believe this to be correct.

What are the maples behind the compacta?

Will, of course I want to help you, I promised you that I would :0)
It's Abies magnifica instead of Abies magnifigca.

    Abies lasiocarpa 'Siskyou'
    Must be written as 'Siskiyou'
This is a true Abies lasiocarpa cultivar.

    Abies lasiocarpa 'Duflon'
    Must be written as 'DuFlon'

Abies lasiocarpa var. Arizonica 'Glauca Compacta'
Is written in the trade as Abies lasiocarpa 'Compacta'

I'm not sure if your 'Prickly Pete' is the right one.
It's colour isn't blue, maybe your's is standing in full shade?

Goodlord what a day I had. Abies magnifigca, wonderful. :(

2-4 hours of direct sunlight on my specimen of 'Prickly Pete' and since it's from Coenosium Gardens, I feel comfortable with the naming.

Edwin, do you know the history of 'DuFlon' and why the unusual spelling? I can't find any examples on the internet.

Will, There was an article in the ACS about the way of writing of the 'DuFlon'.
Someone saw Mr. DuFlon' put a signature under a form at an ACS meeting and recognized his way of writing his second name.
It has something to do with the French language.
It's the same with Tsuga caroliana 'LaBar's Weeping'.
In most collections or nurseries it's just written as Labar's Weeping', La Bar Weeping' or 'La Bar's Weeping'...

Tsuga caroliniana it is instead of Tsuga caroliana...

I agree with Edwin on the Prickly Pete. It's color doesn't look anything like mine I got from Coenosium. Mine is steel blue and flushes a very intense bright blue. This picture is actually greener than it really appears.

Here are a few Alpine Firs and one Abies mag from my garden.
    Abies lasiocarpa Lopalpun

Prickly Pete. Like stated earlier the pic doesn't do it justice it is powdery blue with it's new flush.

    Logan Pass

    Alpine Beauty

    Abies mag Mt. Si

    Abies lasiocarpa DuFlon

Will, Did you get that Siskiyou from Cenosium? I have been hot to get one. Thanks, Jim

Well, I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe it'll brighten up with more sun(we haven't had any sun for about 6 months!).

This is a bit of a mystery plant. Was bought from an online seller as Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Blue Bear' but I am leaning towards Abies lasiocarpa.

Abies lasiocarpa 'Daycreek'. Whistling gardens plant.

    Abies magnifica 'Nana'. Sleeping still?

    Abies magnifica 'Nana'. Second try.

And yes Jim, Coenosium Gardens. Haven't seen them carrying it in some time.

Yep Mark, you got the "true" beautiful blue 'Pricly Pete' ;0)

Jim, you have some real gems in your collection!
These babys are at least a couple of years old :0)
I'm glad that you wrote the 'DuFlon' in the right way.

Will, your "Mystery" Pseudotsuga is an Abies lasiocarpa 'Argentea'

'Daycreek' must bin written as 'Day Creek' but probably this is a mislabeling for 'Dry Creek' which makes more sence...

Normaly seen the Abies magnifica 'Nana' is an upright form.
I think it's wise to stake it's leader...

Your first picture above looks like concolor Sluice.

The second pic I wonder if resembles the original narrow columnar 'Prickley Pete'
