Pinus sabiniana cones

On my almost daily walks I pass several young gray pines. One that has caught my attention has cones I estimated to be 9-10 inches long, about twice the length of the usual gray pine cone. I finally brought along my pole pruner and managed to reach three of these cones, all of which turned out to be 9 1/2 inches long and still full of last fall's seeds. I kept them in a box outside my garage for about two days before the gray squirrels found them and ripped them from head to toe. Never mess with animals that are smarter than you are.
