You'll have to be more specific as to what "water when can" means. How big are they, how are you watering and are you expecting a foot of growth when you just put them in? Pictures would help considerably. Mine has never been difficult, quite easy in fact.

You didn't say if container grown or B&B.

Potted versions ,1-3 gal. perform the best.

B&B 6 ft. and up are a dificult grow. I find that they willl drop excessive amounts of foliage the 2nd year because of insufficient root base to support foliage. Best to avoid B&B for these cultivars.

They can be vigorous growers depending upon what cultivar you have. The 'Green Arrow' close too average growth but needs to be placed correctly to
accommodate width and height for the long haul.

No special watering requirements. Insert index finger in the soil. If soil is dry to the 2nd joint water at a slow trickle till you are sure the growing area is saturated. Repete for several years especially if B&B.
