replacing old with new question

I had about 8 10-12 ft. skyrocket junipers that I have been in the ground for roughly 7 years. they were B&B when planted-decent size rootball. over time they declined and one winter storm kinda sealed their fate last year. I want to replace them in some spots with some green giants- they are small about 2ft at most. would i have to remove the entire root ball of the junipers in order to plant the green giants? I would most likely need a machine- or spend many many man hours with help to remove the older ones. I imagine they would be quite a bit larger & heavier now. So would the older rootball interfere with the success of the green giants? thanks
