| I think I'm about pictured out today. That's a first for me. Thanks Stephen, Dax |
RE: Selection of new grafts

| Certainly been picture heavy lately, but rightly so. I'll keep looking at them Stephen. :) Will |

| Fantastic trees, wonderful setting. |

| Question - what's the difference between Ginkgo biloba 'Spring Grove Sport' and a regular 'Spring Grove'. Marshall |
RE: Selection of new grafts

I want to ask the same quiestion about this Ginkgo. The name of the regular 'Spring Grove' is changed in 'Jeosaphat'. Did you found this Picea abies 'Smee W.B.' in a species or in a cultivar? What does Smee mean? |

Amazing cones on such a small Pinus ponderosa 'Dick Bush' . Are conifers like flowering plants where seed producing uses energy that can preferably be put towards growth, so it is best to remove them (fruit, flowers, cones, etc) when plants are young? Is that this year's graft?! Thinking perhaps Dax is exhausted from being over-stimulated by seeing too many new cultivars...I know I am! Barbara |

I grafted this winter some scion of Pinus ponderosa "Richard Bush" similar to Pinus ponderosa "Dick Bush" maybe it's the same ??? But I think it's doubtfull it's a ponderosa cultivar ! Clément |

Marshall & coniferjoy - Ginkgo 'Spring Grove Sport' is how the material came to me this year with no other info. 'Spring Grove#86 is synonymous with 'Jehosophat', I was expecting 'Spring Grove Sport to possibly be a variegated form, but so far no signs on any on my young grafts. coniferjoy - Picea abies 'Smee WB' is from a species tree, the name Smee is a character from the book/film 'Peter Pan' Barbara & Clement - Pinus ponderosa 'Richard Bush' is correct name, lack of consentration on my part using Dick Bush. This particular graft is the only one on which the female cones have enlarged and the male cones/flowers have developed with no other additional new growth, the plant does seem to be very healthy though. |

| Just to keep this post going a little bit longer, here are a few new grafts of Abies cultivars. Abies veitchii 'Otevenack'
Abies concolor 'Blue Cloak'
Abies pinsapo 'Horcajo'
Abies procera 'Sherwoodii'

Thanks Stephen. I really like those latest selections, in particular the abies concolor 'Blue Cloak'. This one develops an interesting weeping habit I believe and is quite fast-growing. Richard |
RE: Selection of new grafts

| Yes Richard you're right, although it's new to me this year it looks an excellent plant and a lot better choice than 'Fagerhult' if you have the room. |
RE: Selection of new grafts

Yes. Would certainly like to have it in my collection. I have seen photos and as well as the form it has good colour. Do you have one in reserve?! Lately I have been considering which concolor to acquire since I only have one at the moment: abies concolor 'Creamy' Richard |
RE: Selection of new grafts

| I can hold one back if you want it ? mind you, I doubt there will be a mad rush come July :0) |
RE: Selection of new grafts

| Hi Bluespruce, It's good to see that you are succesfull with grafting, they all look very good! The true name of the Abies veitchii 'Otevenack' is 'Drevenack'. This problem started with a tag that was not very clear so the wrong name is bin used. 'Drevenack' is called for the town in Germany were it was found as a witches'broom by Werner Wüstemeyer. |
RE: Selection of new grafts

Yes, I would like to put my name down for one - thank you very much! Richard |

Abies procera 'Sherwoodii' photo/info?
| | |
I just purchased a striking 24" tall Abies procera 'Sherwoodii'. Please can anyone send a pic of it after 10 years growth? I can't find a photo of one on the web, barely a write-up. Growth rate, spread, height, colour changes, best in full sun or partial shade? Thank you, I'm new to conifers and this forum. woodlandgarden |

| Hi Woodlandgarden, Try the link of the topic "Abies procera parade." It's the best to plant this yellow cutivar in partial shade and try to avoid the strong afternoon son. |

Thank you coniferjoy, the link, pic and info answered my questions. And your planting suggestion topped it off. This forum is a remarkable resource! One more question? What nursery (?) site has a thorough photo database of unusual dwarf conifers, I need visuals with commentaries. The larger nurseries tend to offer common, mass sellers. I'm hunting for beautiful and unique dwarf conifers, fast growers or large specimens. I need to spend time on these forums to get clues from the collectors! Thanks again, woodlandgarden |

| Woodlandgarden, have you been to the Iseli site recently? Hundreds of new photos and descriptions. You might find a few unusual and dwarf conifers listed there. |

| Don't go to bluespruce's place. Once you see his you'll always be disappointed in yours. ;-) |

| LOL! - Foxhollow is a conifer lover's fantasyland! I keep hoping I'll wake up and find myself there with camera in hand and an endless supply of memory cards and batteries. |

This is great....for the record, I rarely surf the web, I'm not an avid shopper. But somehow I found myself looking for dwarf cedar nurseries and I accidentally opened up a cedar forum on gardenweb. My days of non-surfing were over. It only took one forum with bluespruce and I was hooked. When I gazed at his garden design I found myself joining gardenweb to track him down. My family looks at me and can't figure what's happened...jetting to England in November? But back to everyone's help getting me on track. Yes, I use Iseli, Stanley-Son's, Garden World, Bizon, all cross referenced with Foxhollow. Thanks to everyone offering photos on the forums, they tell the story. woodlandgarden |
